What is Bariatric revision surgery?

Revision surgeries can help diagnose, identify, and correct complications caused by bariatric operations due to unsuccessful or poorly performed procedures such as the gastric sleeve or gastric band.
Despite the success rate of weight-loss surgeries, it is possible that shortly after their procedure, some patients present severe abdominal pain, heartburn, bloating, or even start gaining back all weight lost. Even that these symptoms are treatable, it has to be done by a highly specialized medical team to handle any complication during the new procedure.

How is the revision surgery done?

Revision surgeries are performed through the same method as the original procedure; for instance, if a gastric band surgery was done laparoscopically, its revision will stay as a laparoscopic intervention as well.
Once the medical team finds the issue, they could fix it with a combination of physical solutions (extractions, drains, stitches, etc.) and metabolic treatment (medicine, hormones, etc.).

Who qualifies for revision surgery?

Patients that never lost any weight or that regained weight lost after bariatric surgery are often candidates for revision surgery. Those symptoms can happen due to a series of reasons that can go from the body’s natural healing process such as dilatations on the digestive system to fistulas generated between the new and old stomach.

For those cases in which the patient wasn’t able to lose any weight after a bariatric procedure, we can consider that as caused by not using proper material to perform the surgery or by poor installation techniques. These cases often show up as having a sleeve bigger or smaller than required or a misplaced gastric band cicatrization.

Luckily, all those patients can have a second chance by fixing their issues with a well-trained, equipped, and professional medical team. Please consider that these procedures are acknowledged as very complex surgeries and must be performed by specialists and expert doctors to diagnose, detect and fix complications on the spot.
